Glasgow Backpackers Reviews page 3
Based on 19 Hotel ReviewsDoes what it says on the tin. What it does not say is there is a great atmosphere, like an Agatha Christie house party, there are discounts for musicians and there always seems to be some band staying there doing a gig in the city. A lot of theatre people, performing or viewing stay there also so it adds up to one fantastic atmosphere. I've returned a couple of times and always enjoyed it.
This place was a nightmare. I was put in a room next to reception, and the night duty staff insisted on watching telly with the volume turned up to eleven, all the while shouting and laughing, for most of the night. It was like trying to sleep in a bleedin' cinema. There was no consideration for the 8 people trying to sleep in the room next to them. I complained, asked to be moved to another room, but this was not possible. I didn't get a wink of sleep that night. The next night they turned the telly down a bit, but continued to laugh and scream for many hours, and I only managed to eventually get asleep with the help of earplugs. The hostel itself was worn, the beds were okay but the bathrooms and showers were a bit grim. This would have been acceptable considering the price, but this hostel has been let down by its staff. You could understand a night's sleep being disturbed if you were sharing a room with a load of pissed up rugby boys; you don't expect your trip to be ruined by the staff.
The hostel was filthy, dark and very poor. There were no numbers on the rooms and the toilets were filthy. I stayed in an 8 dorm room and never slept one night because of a drunk. Fire safety is a disaster waiting to happen. I would never go back.
This is the second time i've stayed at Glasgow Backpackers, coming back for its location and its prices. You are getting what you pay for though - a roof to sleep under whilst taking a break from enjoying the city. No hot water/showers, i didn't check out the kitchen so can't give comment there, the TV/lounge room downstairs is good.
