In the late 19th and early 20th century, Maida Vale was predominantly a Jewish district. The area contains the 1896 Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue (a Grade II listed building) and the headquarters of the British Sephardi community.

Nearby Portobello Road Market is regularly the focus of press and media attention and mostly remembered from the Disney film ‘Bedknobs and Broomsticks’ and more recently the film ‘Notting Hill’.
