History of Westminster
Westminster is so steeped in history that to get a full sense of it all you’ll need to visit it in person. The area is historically part of Middlesex and takes its name from Westminster Abbey. Its historical origins stem from Thorney Island, site of Westminster Abbey, and throughout its history it has always been synonymous with government and royalty. The Abbey was and still is the traditional venue that is used for the coronation of the country’s kings and queens. After the Norman Invasion in 1066, the Palace of Westminster became the main residence for the monarchy, and later housed the early development of the law courts and parliament of England.
Over the years, the monarchy moved into other areas of London and the courts moved out to a new location in The City. The district really has retained its political history though, and is still the working home to central government. Westminster is known the world over as the central point of government for England, and the name Westminster is often used to describe the collective political community in this country. To really get an idea of the amazing landmarks, rich heritage and fascinating history of Westminster, you really should take a look for yourself!
