History of Embankment

History of Embankment

Embankment runs from the City of Westminster right up to the City of London along the north bank of the River Thames, and was originally developed in the 19th Century to reclaim marshy land from the river banks. The road and walkway known as Victoria Embankment was completed in 1870, under the direction of Joseph Bazalgette. The original need was to create a modern sewage system for London and to relieve the congestion in and around The Strand and Fleet Street.

It wasn’t just about sewage and crowding though! As part of the development, two attractive gardens were built and became known as the Victoria Embankment Gardens. These public parks are home to a number of statues and historic features; most famous is the water gate in the north west corner of the park. The water gate was built in 1626 as part of York House and was the entry route to the Thames for the Duke of Buckingham. The parks are also a great place to mingle in the summer and they even host a number of open air concerts during these months. From its humble beginnings, Embankment has become a truly spectacular place to visit, as you will see by strolling along the Thames. Embankment today is a vibrant area, full of hustle and bustle and great things to see and do, offering you a wonderful experience!

Need to Know Embankment

Need to Know Embankment

As with all areas of Central London, literally thousands of people travel through Embankment on a daily basis. This means that Embankment is very lively and fast paced, but to be honest that’s one of the great things about spending time in the heart of the capital. As there are a large number of theatres, bars and restaurants in Embankment, people tend to be out about until late, but this shouldn’t worry you as you’ll always have the sanctuary of your hotel room to return to for some peace and quiet! You will see a huge amount of road traffic in Embankment just like other districts, but this shouldn’t deter you either, as you can walk or get the tube to local attractions and other areas of London.
