The Whitgift Almshouses, London
The Whitgift Almshouses
On the corner of North End and George Street, comfortably nestled between the tramlines and Croydon Outlet Store, is a long, flint wall with a small, wrought iron gate at its centre. There’s a blue plaque on the wall, and if you were to enter you’d find yourself in a beautifully maintained Elizabethan garden, quiet as night in spite of the busy high street just over the wall. You are surrounded by a 400-year-old hospital that was founded in 1596 for the needy of Croydon and Lambeth. It is now used for a variety of functions, and visiting is only allowed at certain times, but as a point of interest it is beautiful, and serves as a nice symbol of London’s tendency to both preserve and pioneer in the same breath.
