Tucked away behind one of the county’s oldest market streets (Surrey Street) is Croydon’s Old Town, and in the renovated grounds of an old Victorian Pumping Station is this multi-purpose café venture: Matthews Yard. You’re greeted by a café with expansive seating in a sparse, white-washed room (allowing for sporadic art installations), with a counter selling posh sandwiches, coffees, teas, cakes and beers and wine. Prices are reasonable, and this certainly gives the customer a greater sense of sophistication than many of the nearby venues (which are typically pubs). The venue is popular amongst Croydon’s working clientele and amateur arts societies because of its rentable performance space, office space and rehearsal space. Live music is also hosted.
