Clapham Common, London
Clapham Common
At 220 acres of roaming, playing, picnicking, skating, walking, running, paddling, dog walking, festival-going fun, you’ve got your perfect day out right there. The park has football pitches, a running track, bowling (traditional English bowling; not the American ten-pin kind!), skating, cricket, rugby and is one of the only London venues to offer space to play rugby’s brutal Australian cousin, Ozzie Rules. There’s also a delightful bandstand.
For you, lucky visitor, getting there is made doubly easy by the fact that both Clapham Common Tube Station and Clapham South border its edges, and are served by the Northern Line, which will take you all the way back into the centre. It’s also got some interesting history, with the slave trade having been abolished thanks to the Holy Trinity Church situated at its edge, as well as once playing host to a windmill (there’s a pub there now).
