Portobello Film Festival: Attend an alternative festival
While there are plenty of music, art and dance festivals that fill London's summer events calendar, why not try something a little different? The Portobello Film Festival provides a platform for new film-makers to show off their work and some even make it into the mainstream. It is entirely free and shows films in diverse venues. And for a truly unique festival setting, every September the Tower of London hosts the Tower Festival, featuring dance and music performances by a host of well-known artists. Past performers have included ballet from Sadler's Wells and opera from Lesley Garrett. Around 3,000 tickets are available each night and you can even bring a picnic. September 22nd also marks the return of 100% Norway, part of the London Design Festival. Some of the best designers, architects and manufacturers from Norway will show off their work at the event, including designs by new kids on the block.

Mayor's Thames Festival: Celebrate at the Mayor's expense
London's largest outdoor arts festival, the Mayor's Thames Festival is a celebration of London, its mix of cultures revolving around the river. Held from September 10th-11th, it is also a brilliant way to say goodbye to the summer. All along the Thames from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge, you can find something going on, from food stalls to music and dancing, carnivals, visual art and pyrotechnics. And to finish it off, a huge fireworks display is held on the river.

Much Ado About Nothing: See Shakespeare before it rains
One great thing about London in the summer is that you can see performances outside, with a particular highlight being the Open Air theatre at Regent's Park and Shakespeare's Globe. So before it starts to get too cold you can catch the end of the theatre season. Much Ado About Nothing runs at the Globe until October 1st, one of the bard's greatest comedies. In fact, the play is also on at Wyndham's Theatre, with David Tennant and Catherine Tate in the lead roles. Over at the Open Air Theatre, Gershwin's musical comedy Crazy For You will be rounding off the summer season, with memorable songs including "I Got Rhythm" and "Someone To Watch Over Me".

Last Night of the Proms: Party in classical music style
After a summer of more than 70 concerts performed afternoon and evening, the BBC Proms ends on an absolute high every year on September 10th. The Last Night of the Proms is always a lighter affair and this year's will see performances of Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, music from the Sound of Music and Carousel and of course annual favourites Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia and Jerusalem, ending with union flags, whistles and cheering.
